Beans, Beans the Magical Fruit! (And Other Food Storage Adventures)

Brian’s parents are great. Every time we go to their house, we are always encouraged to “go shopping” in their basement, where a treasure trove of food storage awaits us. This past trip (over the Christmas break) we helped organize it, and were allowed to take a lot of what they had too many of.

The bulk of the bounty was made up of, yep, you guessed it… BEANS! In 5 varieties, some of which I’d never heard of before. The only problem now is… what to do with them?

Here are the main things I've done, but if any one has any other bean dishes, I'd love to hear them!

Meal #1: Rice, Beans, & Salad/Veggies.
Meal #2: Chicken & Bean Curry (my proudest creation)
Meal #3: Sweet Chili.
Meal #4: Taco salad with amazing meat/bean stuff (recipe from a friend).

If anyone has any other passable chilis or other bean recipes, or want to try some of the above please let me know! I'd love to try some new variations.

The Mormon "Mommy Blog" Phenomenon...

I LOVED this article:

Photography Attempt #1: Coming Home From Campus

I love photography! (Though it mostly involves looking at other peoples' work.) It's amazing how creative people can be. It's inspired me to try and take better photos. Here's my first attempt:

Descending the Slippery Slopes of Campus

"Southern Desert Shrubland." Ha.

One of the newly renovated walkways.

Down to the Duckpond

Creeper Duckpond Shot. (I wish I'd gotten a better angle for this one...)

Quacky Congregation... I really have no idea how/why they stay here in Winter.
Anybody have an idea?
Well, that was attempt number one! It was fun to experiment and see how they turned out. Hopefully I'll improve with practice! If anyone has any tips let me know :)

My Friends, the Maintenance Guys....

You know something's up when the people who visit your apartment the most are your building's maintenance crew. Here are some things they have "visited us" for in the past 5 months:

  1. 2 sets of broken blinds (both replaced)
  2. Leaking a/c vent (checked... turned out to be condensation)
  3. Broken vacuum from before I was born (replaced)
  4. Bugs in some of the lower cupboards in kitchen (sprayed)
  5. Shower-bath lever broken (replaced)
  6. Shower leaking & broken knob (separate incident, replaced)
  7. Toilet plugging (snaked)
  8. Exploding burner that shut off all power (replaced, power reinstated)
  9. Kitchen sink overflow, courtesy of neighbor's dishwasher... (ongoing)
Yep, the saga of the sink continues. Fortunately our kind neighbors have agreed not to use their dishwasher for the next couple of days. When they ran it the sink produced about (not kidding) 30 gallons of water(!) that we transferred to an outside water feature...

Here's the current state:
Woohoo! The plumber just turned up.... :)

Dream Home Activity (Courtesy of Date Jar :)

So, a while ago my sister's Relief Society did a great activity where they made some awesome date jars! I loved the ideas they had for them, especially as they are mainly activities you can do at home, or on a tight budget. Anyways, last night we decided to pick an activity...

We used a vase for ours, complete with my graduation thingy.

"Design your dream home, then compare ideas."

This is Brian's! He really wants a porch, and porch swing. He would also love fruit trees and pillars if possible. I really love the idea of a porch, too, but couldn't figure out how I was going to draw one :)

My "dream" house! Note the doormat, vegetable patch, extensive library, and random kids everywhere. :)

We had a lot of fun! If you'd like to make a date jar, there's a great list of ideas here.

You can also go here for more date ideas.

Belated Graduation Pictures!

With finals, family flying in, graduation, a sealing, 2 receptions and a honeymoon all taking place in less than 10 days, my graduation got a bit shafted. We did have a great time though. I was really mad I had to dress up both days, but I quickly got over it and even endured the incredible heat. It was the first official graduation thing I'd ever even been to, but I really got into it. I even rang the victory bell outside the Marriott Center!

The sun was really bright... :)

Melisa and I are obviously looking at a different camera...

"Next stop, a work permit!" (Which still hasn't arrived.)

Yellowstone Adventures!

Hi everyone! A while ago I mentioned we'd been to Yellowstone. We went in September but we've just got the pictures! The trip was short but a lot of fun. We saw all kinds of wildlife and even got to pass a bison on the highway. Those things are HUGE! I'm sorry I didn't get a photo of that one.
THIS is what we woke up to.

Smoking Geysers were fun and stinky!
This was the view of the road by where we camped after the snow melted a little.

Brian and I enjoyed Gelato in the amazing lodge.

Professor McLeary teaches us about bacteria, which was actually quite fascinating.

Beautiful views.
Sad story! I ran to the loo being told it'd be at least 10 minutes before old faithful blew.... unfortunately  it went off while I was gone! :( I guess there's always next year...

Brian's Birthday!

It was Brian's birthday last week and we had a great time. In the morning we had a big breakfast with a variety of pancakes, eggs, etc. After classes I surprised him with a candlelit dinner. It was so much fun! Afterwards we had a semi-surprise gathering of friends for cake, singing, and treats. It was a great night. I wish I'd taken more photos!

This is a remnant of Brian's cake... I used some edible glitter for a big "B" on top of the cake. The only problem was that it got absolutely everywhere! Our kitchen is still sparkling, and not in the clean sense! :)
(PS A big thanks to Sandra for the glitter, though it was messy, it was a lot of fun!)

Brian's fortune cookie comes true sooner than expected...

Over the Christmas break we got to eat out at some fun places in and around Blackfoot. At the local Chinese, Brian's fortune cookie read: "In a few years you will do well in the entertainment business."

And here's the fulfillment for your viewing pleasure :)
